Here is the projected roster for the Sabres.
Projections are based on the following: (1) The team will carry 14 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies. (2) No assumptions are made about free agents being signed until they are official.
Ryan O’Reilly, Evander Kane, Matt Moulson, Tyler Ennis, Brian Gionta, David Legwand, Jamie McGinn, Marcus Foligno, Zemgus Girgensons, and Nicholas Deslauriers are all essentially locks to make the team.
Sam Reinhart had a monster development camp, giving him an early lead on making the NHL club this season. Jack Eichel wasn’t as dominant, but is the future of the team and will likely start in Buffalo. The final two spots on the team probably go to Cody McCormick and Johan Larsson.
Phil Varone is probably the odd man out here, and will probably get sent back to Rochester, but could be the first callup when the inevitable injuries hit.
Zach Bogosian, Josh Gorges, Mike Weber, Rasmus Ristolainen and Carlo Colaiacovo are guaranteed to make the team.
Mark Pysyk has probably played his last game in Rochester, and could earn Top 4 minutes in Buffalo. The seventh defensive spot is a tossup right now, with Chad Ruhwedel getting the early edge, while Jake McCabe goes back to Rochester to get more playing time.
Robin Lehner and Chad Johnson are entrenched as the tandem this season.
