The Rochester Americans took on the North Divion leading Hamilton Bulldogs Wednesday night at the Blue Cross Arena and came away with a 5-3 victory. With goals from Mike Zigomanis, Matt Ellis, Frederick Roy, and Chad Ruhwedel who had 2 they led 4-1 going into the third. Just like the Marlies did last saturday the Bulldogs fought their way back with goals from Joonas Nattinen, and Louis Leblanc in the third. Steven Andrighetto also scored a goal in the second.
The Amerks did what they set out to do in the beginning of the year, start fast. About three and a half minuets into the game Mike Zigomanis capitalized on a puck which landed behind goalie
Dan Dustin Tokarski. With about three minuets left in the first Matt Ellis on the power play hammered away at his own rebound till it went by a sprawled out Tokarski.
Already on the power play the Amerks pressured the Bulldogs into a sloppy line change and another penalty for too many men on the ice. With the 5 on 3 Chad Ruhwedel found the top corner of the net through all the traffic for his first goal of the season and the 3rd goal of the game for the Amerks. The bulldogs responded with a goal of their own when Andrighetto found an easy tip in after a rebound on the rush.
With the Amerks leading 3-1 and Chad Ruhwedel , Frederick Roy and Jamie Tardif leading a 3-2 break for the Amerks, Chad fired the puck at net which went in. Goalie Tokarski was not expecting a shot in this situation and let in an easy goal.
With the Amerks leading 4-1 in the 3rd the Bulldogs started their comeback with Joonas Nattinen sweeping the puck around Matt Hackett who got caught out of position after making a save. Louis Leblanc then took a shot off the face-off that squeaked by Hackett for the 3rd goal of the game.
With the Amerks trying to hold on for the victory coach Cassidy put trust in undersized second yr player Frederick Roy who might have made the play of the game when he blocked the shot of former top Sweden Defenseman Magnus Nygren. Roy took it halfway up the ice before shooting it for the empty net goal to close out the game.
When the Amerks heard the horn to end the game they knew they have recorded points in 6 consecutive games to bring their record to 5-2-1-1. they Currently hold the 3rd spot in the North Division but trailing only by 1 point to Toronto and Hamilton. With the Amerks receiving some vets from buffalo and having 7 games in 11 days they are poised to make a push for the number 1 spot.
